What's the difference between 'acoustic' and 'classical' guitars? A classical guitar (or Spanish guitar) will normally feature nylon strings on the higher notes only. The lower 3 strings are made of steel, just like a normal guitar. This guitar also features a slotted headstock, and a fairly wide neck and body. It has a softer, more mellow sound than the acoustic guitar. An acoustic guitar will have a slimmer appearance than its classical counterpart. The neck is thinner, allowing smaller hands to reach around with ease. Acoustic guitars usually feature steel strings, which produces the louder sound that is associated with pop or folk music today.   Which is better for my musical kid: steel or nylon strings? Nylon strings are softer, and therefore easier on little fingers than steel, but don't think that steel strings will hurt your child! The big deciding question is whether your musical kid is playing the guitar, or playing with the guitar. If you have a child that just wants to pick it up and strum and play every now and then, the exposure to the strength of the strings is minimal-either style guitar will do. If you have a child that is seriously interested in learning to play you may want to consider nylon strings-these softer strings will be more comfortable for the everyday practicer. Keep in mind that switching from one style guitar to another is not difficult, so moving from a classical to an acoustic later down the road is always an option! What size guitar does my musical kid need? Age is a general guideline for the size guitar your child needs. Keep in mind that your child's height relative to his/her age is also a deciding factor.
